The Blue Slipper Theater in Livingston presents Jason Robert Brown’s modern musical, THE LAST FIVE YEARS, June 16-18 and June 23-25.
An intimate musical about two artists who fall in and out of love over the course of five years, THE LAST FIVE YEARS premiered to critical acclaim in 2001 — and was quickly named one of TIME Magazine’s best shows of the year. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy (played by Livingston-based actor Stephanie Burda), telling her story from the end of a marriage while Jamie (played by Bozeman-based actor Ansel Mills), shares his point of view chronologically.
“Nothing draws us in more than a good love story. We can all relate to the journey of a relationship. It pulls on our hearts,” director Kate Britton shared. “There is nothing traditional about this non-linear storytelling, though. It’s innovative and electric. Ansel and Stephanie have an incredible ability to bring emotional authenticity and naturalism to the complex music of Jason Robert Brown. They are powerhouses!”
The narrative is carried by music throughout the entire show, performed by seasoned keyboardist Lori Rosolowsky and cellist Chandra Lind. “The score is rich and varied — waltzes and ballads are punctuated with klezmer, rock, and Latin styles,” Rosolowsky said of the music. “It’s heartwarming, heartbreaking, and hilarious.”
“It’s an emotional show,” producer Ethan Leuzinger added. “It does a great job showing how differently things can look when you approach them from varying points in time. Love is complicated and messy, I think this show really captures that.”
THE LAST FIVE YEARS is generously sponsored by Chico Hot Springs, Ace Hardware, Carol Glenn and Sal Lalani, and Dan Bailey’s Outdoor Co. This production is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI).
